Project Description

G.W. Becker, Inc. recently designed, manufactured, and shipped a 15-ton top-running double girder bridge crane for a long-standing customer in the metals manufacturing industry. This crane is the first of twelve units being built for a multi-phase equipment upgrade project.

This crane replaces an existing unit that had been in operation for over 100 years. The new system was designed to increase safety, reliability, and performance in the customer’s production environment.

The crane features a 100’-0” span and 59’-0” lift, with operation at 460 Volt / 3 Phase / 60 Hertz. It is designed for CMAA Class “C” moderate service and will be operated indoors in ambient temperatures ranging from 60°F to 120°F.

Despite the complexity of the build, this unit went from nearly bare girders to fully operational and ready to ship within a few short weeks.

Key Specs:

  • Radio remote control with backup pendant
  • Motion-activated audible warnings for bridge and trolley travel
  • Operator-controlled audible warning device
  • Two (2) LED status lights
  • Four (4) red LED drop zone lights
  • Six (6) LED crane lights mounted to footwalk, accessible for maintenance
  • Anti-sway control
  • Motorized rotation for the lower hook block
  • Unitized controls in NEMA 12 air-conditioned enclosure, mounted on custom footwalk and service platform
  • Energy-absorbing bridge and trolley bumpers, per CMAA specifications
  • Custom-engineered end trucks
  • Welded steel box girder construction, built for heavy service

This crane represents the first of twelve systems that will support the customer’s modernization efforts and help drive long-term productivity.
